The Game Plan

Watch now for £3.45

“Pleasant surprise: this formulaic, feelgood, live-action Disney film is targeted primarily at little girls, but should be enjoyed by all the family, males and adults included,” said the Daily Mail.

Starring former wrestler Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (pictured), this is essentially an unofficial spin-off of the likes of Kindergarten Cop, in which a big burly bloke is revealed to have a softer side through the love of a small child.

The Rock plays superstar quarterback Joe Kingman, whose Boston-based team is chasing the championship.

He lives the uncomplicated life of a bachelor until he wakes up one day to find himself the father of a seven-year-old daughter he never knew he had.

“Despite its cheesy story, this film has one major trump card,” said BBC Movies. “Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is actually quite good.”

“It’s not the most demanding role for a former sports star, but he does show enough charm and comic ability to make this a relatively painless affair for parents.”

Though this is essentially Disney entertainment at its most formulaic, Johnson – who proves here he really does have acting talent – is ably abetted by the lovely Kyra Sedgwick as his steely-eyed agent, who’s trying to spin the story for all its worth.

“This movie is so likeable that it glides over its many plot holes,” said the New York Times, “and The Rock is committed to every moment.”
