“It’s a modern-day Holocaust, so say the people in front of and behind the camera in Darfur Now, and no one seems to want to do anything about it,” wrote the Chicago Tribune, about a documentary that hopes to bring Sudan’s ongoing tragedy into the cultural spotlight.
“This documentary paints a vivid picture of the grim reality in Sudan’s western region seen through the eyes of six people dedicated to enduring the humanitarian catastrophe that began in 2003,” it continued.
Of late, Sudan has found itself a prime subject across the media, perhaps because the world’s leaders have so comprehensively failed to act.
A kind of cinematic companion piece to Dave Eggers’ biography of one of the country’s misplaced, What Is The What, Darfur Now aims to prompt people into affirmative action.
Co-produced by the actor Don Cheadle (who also appears alongside George Clooney), this film sees even celebrities intervening in what has become an international crisis.
“Films have chronicled horrific events such as genocide before, but Darfur Now is in its own category,” wrote USA Today.
“The documentary was made during the crisis, which continues today, and by showing the struggles and efforts of about half a dozen people, it puts a human face on the tragedy.”
At one point, Cheadle asks the viewer to consider the children caught in the crisis.
“You can sense their potential,” he says. “You can see that kids really are just kids. You think, maybe their journey is in some way tied to my journey on this planet. That’s you, and that’s me.”
