This is a busy time for pop stars celebrating their half century. Hot on the heels of Madonna’s 50th comes Michael Jackson’s.
The self-proclaimed King of Pop is a man whose endlessly curious face belies his age – he could easily pass for 49. Or 12.
To celebrate his birthday, BT Vision presents a comprehensive selection of the man’s very best music videos, each of which prove beyond argument that Jackson is a true one-off.
“1982, the year of the album Thriller, was when Michael Jackson was the coolest, slinkiest, prettiest pop star alive,” Rolling Stone wrote.
Watching these videos back-to-back proves fascinating for all manner of reasons, not just for the man’s remarkable consistency – did anyone ever write better pop songs? – but also to watch him morph from sweet innocence into something very different.
From the era of Thriller comes the indomitable Beat It and Billy Jean, while 1988’s Dirty Diana, from the album Bad, sees Jackson unafraid to rock out.
By the mid-1990s, excess came naturally to him.
In Earth Song, Jacko attempted to save the world; for 1995’s Scream, a duet with his sister Janet, he spent more money on the accompanying video than the globe had ever seen.
But the most poignant moment is perhaps 1979’s Don’t Stop Until You Get Enough – a piece of loose-limbed genius sung by a young man who had no idea where his life was to take him.
