“A fast-paced, surreal and quick-witted fairytale, bursting with snappy dialogue,” enthused David Chater in The Times, “which reinvents Hans Andersen with the speed and irreverence of The Simpsons.”

Former Brookside babe Anna Friel (pictured above) stars in this kooky supernatural drama that’s been nominated for Golden Globe awards and regularly attracts 10 million viewers in the US.

Created by Bryan Fuller, who made his name as executive producer on the sci-fi hit Heroes, Pushing Daisies tells the fantastical tale of Ned (Lee Pace), a pie-maker whose touch can bring the dead back to life.

The gorgeous Friel plays his first childhood crush, Chuck, who dies but is resurrected by Ned.

The catch? If Ned touches the love of his life a second time, she’ll die permanently.

The show delights in its own distinctive look, which Kathryn Flett of the Observer nailed perfectly, as a “hyper-real saturated colourfest – think Tim Burton being made controller of CBeebies and handed a very big budget.”

At first, Ned uses his weird talent to rejuvenate fruit for his pie-making business.

However, he soon realises there’s money to be made by resurrecting murder victims, establishing the identities of their killers and claiming the reward.

Pushing Daisies’ charming quirkiness is enhanced by a nicely-judged voice-over from former Carry On movie stalwart Jim Dale, who’s now a big name in America as narrator of the Harry Potter audiobooks.

“The script tears along at a hundred miles an hour, full of puns and witticisms,” said Sam Wollaston in the Guardian.
