American Chopper on Vision TV on demand“This fly-on-the-workshop-wall series has become a phenomenon in the States, where the New York Post has called it ‘a reality TV show so fascinating, it leaves you wanting more,’” said James Rampton in the Independent.

Since Rampton’s review of the debut show in 2004, American Chopper has become the Discovery Channel’s most-watched programme in the UK.

Jennifer Frey of the Washington Post rightly described it as, “a soap-operatic show that revolves around a crotchety, tank-top-wearing dad who chews out his son as he goes about building motorcycles with names like Comanche Helicopter Bike.”

The always-at-loggerheads father and son team of Paul Teutul (pictured above) and Paul Teutul Jr run Orange County Choppers, a New York State-based workshop which creates extravagantly customised motorcycles for the rich and famous, including Will Smith, Russell Crowe and Bill Murray.

However, the Hollywood superstars are completely overshadowed by the amazing Teutuls, whose propensity for sulking frequently explodes into fiery but hilarious verbal exchanges as they struggle to meet their demanding customers’ short delivery deadlines.

The unexpected runaway success of American Chopper’s first series led to the marketing of not one but two video games.

Even more amazingly, the series has spawned its own macho perfume range, Full Throttle.

“In among a staple diet of natural history and science features,” said Kevin Ash in the Telegraph, “this oddball, fly-on-the-wall series about a bunch of geezers who build choppers and argue a lot is an unlikely success.”
