“Alex O’Loughlin is suitably dark and sexy as the good-guy private eye Mick St John,” said Gabrielle Starkey in The Times. “Moonlight is big-budget mythic romance with a bite.”
Written by Ron Koslow – creator of the hit 1980s series Beauty And The Beast – and produced by Joel Silver of Matrix fame, Moonlight won the 2008 People’s Choice Award as Favourite New TV Drama.
“The lead character is a vampire, but he uses his supernatural powers for good,” explained Steve Biodrowski on the horror, fantasy and sci-fi website Cinefantastique.
“He’s a private investigator in Los Angeles, and he is not troubled by crucifixes, holy water, or even wooden stakes.”
Like a vampire Superman, the toothy detective frequently finds himself using his supernatural powers to rescue a danger-prone blonde news reporter.
This delectable Lois Lane-alike is played by our very own Sophia Myles, whose performances have previously enriched Mansfield Park and Doctor Who.
“O’Loughlin brings a hunky quality to Mick, added to the torment of his loneliness, internally musing with Beast-like melancholy, ‘Sixty years is a long time to deny yourself the touch of another’,” noted Variety’s Brian Lowry.
The Telegraph’s Simon Horsford, however, was less impressed, complaining, “a toothless storyline and wooden acting render Moonlight a bit of a dud.”
Nevertheless, devotees of the top-rated Buffy spin-off, Angel – whose David Greenwalt contributes to Moonlight scripts – should find this dark thriller more than agreeable.
“Plenty of action,” said Barry Garron of the Hollywood Reporter, “and the lighting and set designs are particularly effective.”
